SES Joins CSR Europe to Lead Sustainability Efforts in the Space Sector and Further Integrate ESG into its Day-to-Day Operations — CSR Europe

SES, the leader in global content connectivity solutions, has joined CSR Europe as part of its commitment to make a difference in alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

In 2022, SES launched the “Horizon Strategy,” a purpose-led ESG strategy supporting 11 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and integrated into SES’s business goals. The Horizon Strategy outlines SES’s commitment to advancing sustainable development by harnessing the power of space to address the most pressing challenges on Earth. There are four key pillars to this strategy: Sustainable Space, Climate Action, Diversity and Inclusion, and Critical Human Needs.

As leaders in the space sector, SES started its sustainability journey with a first focus on space sustainability, debris mitigation, and operations in space. By adopting Sustainable Space as a key goal, SES is committed to developing new technologies, partnerships, and solutions that enable safe operations to foster a more sustainable space economy. One of these is its partnership with NorthStar Earth & Space Inc. to enhance space situational awareness, addressing the urgent challenges posed by increasing space debris and orbital congestion.

Satellites deliver communication and broadband services in remote or hard-to-reach areas, are easily deployable to help restore communications networks when disasters occur, and even provide much of the data needed to identify and track the sources of carbon and methane emissions contributing to climate change. SES acknowledges this potential and addresses both ongoing and emergency Critical Human Needs. On an ongoing basis, SES works with governments, telcos, and NGOs around the world, to help close the digital divide.

Regarding Diversity and Inclusion, SES is committed to creating a workforce as diverse as the millions of people who directly or indirectly benefit from its services. By joining CSR Europe, SES seeks to further this commitment and continue fostering and nurturing an inclusive company culture, where all employees regardless of race, background, or sexual orientation feel empowered to share their own stories and contribute to the success of a global team. Last year, SES committed to increasing the gender diversity of people managers and executives by 50% by 2027, and the company is actively working to encourage more women into STEM careers by sponsoring STEM education opportunities for women.

“At SES, we are passionate about making a positive difference in the world and we are committed to advancing sustainable development. We chose to join CSR Europe over other organizations for several reasons”, Amber Legerwood, Director of Social and Environmental Impact explained: “Firstly, CSR Europe facilitates connecting with other companies and organizations committed to corporate social responsibility. Secondly, we value the ability to share best practices with other members and learn from their experiences. Finally, we appreciate the access to subject matter experts and training that CSR Europe provides, allowing us to continuously improve our CSR practices. We believe that CSR Europe is the best fit for our needs and will help us meet our goals in the area of corporate social responsibility.”

By joining CSR Europe, SES is outlining its commitment to sharing best CSR practices that accelerate and enhance the implementation of initiatives focusing on employee diversity, equity, and inclusion, climate actions, responsible business conduct, and sustainable finance, reporting and procurement.
