The leading automotive partnership, Drive Sustainability (DS), is joining forces with the global union federation IndustriALL, in a new pilot project aimed at securing decent jobs and working conditions along the entire battery supply chain in Indonesia. The project, stemming from the intelligence collected by DS partners in Raw Material Outlook – the DS platform facilitating a unified approach to raw materials and decarbonization – will focus specifically on the nickel value chain.
In an effort to enhance the due diligence processes of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), the pilot program will not only incorporate the invaluable input of workers into risk analysis but also ensure that labour standards are fully integrated into the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) policies of BMW Group, Daimler Truck, Ford Motor Company, Geely, Honda, Jaguar Land Rover, Mercedes Benz, Scania, Toyota Motor Europe, Volkswagen Group, Volvo Cars, and Volvo Group. Furthermore, the project seeks to transcend the conventional ‘tick-the-box’ approach to due diligence by prioritizing close collaboration with in-house stakeholders for tangible on-the-ground improvements. In this respect, Drive Sustainability’s project partner, IndustriALL, will play a crucial role, representing 50 million employees in 140 countries and working in key sectors such as automotive, chemical, energy, ICT electrical & electronics, mining and diamond, gem, ornament, and jewellery processing (DGOJP). The project is now in its design phase and will officially kick off in January 2024.
With the pilot, Drive Sustainability is taking a step forward in the implementation of its 2030 strategy, which aims to boost sustainability across the automotive industry by engaging with suppliers and stakeholders in critical areas such as raw materials, workforce well-being, carbon neutrality, and circularity. In executing this pilot, Drive Sustainability partners will rely also on Raw Material Outlook, a platform facilitating a unified approach to raw materials and decarbonization.
