On one hand, partners distributed a “Spot-Check Tool” directly to drivers. This easily accessible survey, developed in collaboration with CSR Europe, aims to evaluate the respect of basic human and labour rights as well as the adequacy of the facilities that the drivers relied on throughout their workday. The questions inquire about different aspects of drivers’ daily routine, from access to medical treatment at work to the obligation to drive beyond driving hours limit to return the truck. To have a more comprehensive view of the impact of their business, platform partners also invited their direct suppliers and sub-contractors to share the survey with their employees.
At the same time, partners developed and implemented the “Adequate Facility Checklist” to streamline the assessment of the hosting quality across a range of facilities, like access to drinking water, clean toilets, parking slot availability, as well as more advanced requirements such as easily accessible grievance mechanisms at facility level.
This extensive and concerted action allowed to collect precious feedback on human rights violations and social risks from 1,000 drivers, 40+ suppliers of logistic services and 50+ facilities. Alongside typical concerns within the road transport sector, including inadequate remuneration, imbalances between working and resting hours, and the scarcity of clean restroom facilities, other common issues have emerged. These include for instance the lack of awareness among drivers regarding their trade union and collective representation rights, as well as the absence of fundamental services like access to clean drinking water in the facilities.
